Camp Kitchen Gear
There’s some camp kitchen gear that you’ll need in order to make this pizza recipe:
- Dutch oven – Of course, you’ll need a dutch oven to cook this pizza! I use a 4 Qt. dutch oven and it makes the perfect little personal pizzas. You can also use a larger dutch oven such as an 8 Qt.
- Charcoal Chimney Starter – Used to easily light the briquettes.
- Kingsford briquettes – I only buy Kingsford briquettes. Don’t buy the off-brand cheap ones. I’ve tried them and they don’t work nearly as well.
- Fire/heat resistant gloves – Used to protect your hands as you take the pizza to and from the hot dutch oven.
- Dutch oven lid lifter – Used to take the hot dutch oven lid on and off.
- Metal Tongs – Used to move the hot briquettes on and off the dutch oven.
- Parchment Paper – We assemble the pizza and cook it right on parchment paper for easy transfer to and from the dutch oven and no cleanup!
Dutch Oven Pizza Ingredients
- Pizza dough – I use 1 pound of pizza dough to make 2 pizzas in my 4 Qt. dutch oven. I usually buy pizza dough from the grocery store, but if you prefer, you can easily make your own at home before your camping trip.
- Pizza sauce – Again, I buy a pre-made pizza sauce to make this camping dinner super easy.
- Mozzarella cheese – I buy pre-shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese and a lot of it!
- Olive Oil – Olive oil is used to coat the dough so it doesn’t dry out while it’s coming to room temperature. I use these small to-go tubes for packing my olive oil on camping trips.
- Toppings – This is where you can get creative and bring along any toppings that you want! If you want to use bacon or sausage, I would cook it at home first and then store it in the cooler so you don’t have to cook it at camp. Other possible toppings are fresh basil (my favorite!), pepperoni, bell peppers, onions, or mushrooms.
- Extra flour – If your dough is really sticky, it’s nice to have a little extra flour to sprinkle on the surface so that the dough doesn’t stick as much.
How to Make Dutch Oven Pizza
Dutch oven pizza is not as complicated as it might look. Below you’ll find step-by-step instructions and photos.

Step 1: Preparation
You want your dough to come to room temperature as best as possible. Unpackage the dough and place it on a piece of parchment paper. Sprinkle a little bit of flour on the parchment paper if your dough is sticky.
Rub a little bit of olive oil all over the top of the dough so that it doesn’t dry out.
Next, prepare the briquettes. Briquettes typically take 20-30 minutes to pre-heat. They begin to turn white and ashy when they’re ready to be used.
You’ll need a lot of briquettes for this recipe – enough to create 450°F to 475°F in your dutch oven. The exact amount will vary depending on the size of your dutch oven.
Step 2: Pizza Assembly
On a piece of parchment paper, stretch the pizza dough into a thin circle about the size of your dutch oven. (1 pound of dough usually makes 2 pizzas, so split the dough in half first.)
Spread the pizza sauce on top and then the mozzarella cheese. Don’t use too much sauce or it will add too much moisture.
Step 3: Cooking
Preheat an empty dutch oven to about 450°F for about 5 minutes. You want the dutch oven to be nice and hot when you place the pizza inside.
With your heat-resistant gloves on, carefully hold on to the parchment paper and transfer the pizza into the dutch oven.
Top with the dutch oven lid.
Cook for about 14 minutes. If you check and it needs more time, simply close the lid and let it cook for a few more minutes.
Note: If you’re planning to make additional pizzas, make sure to preheat more briquettes so you have fresh ones to swap in as the first batch cools.
Step 4: Eat
Carefully remove the pizza from the dutch oven and slide it onto a cutting board.
Top with fresh basil (if using), slice, and serve!
